Okay, our question for today...
We're all there. Gas and food prices are high. As many as one out of 10 people are out of work. The economy is possibly the worst of our lifetimes.
Still, part of the beauty of the romance genre is that it offers us a happy ending guaranteed escape from it all. Right?
So my question to you is this: how do you select what you will read?
Do you stick with your favorite authors?
Do you stick with your favorite publishers?
Do you stay with just vampire erotic, sweet historicals, M/M...? What's your vice?
PRIZES? Yeah, we'll do them. I'll pick out one winner to receive a crisp new print copy of The Year of Living Shamelessly by Susanna Carr.
Any authors who post will get one free year of featured membership at TRS. Yeah, this is a serious offer. LOL
Be sure to enter our book-a-day giveaway today and every day for a chance to win books: http://theromancestudio.com/bad_form.php
Can we (The Romance Studio) come play at your blog? If so, please email me at tina.pavlik@gmail.com.
Thank you!

I usually stick with my favorite authors. But sometimes I like to try something new.
I pick books that intrigue me. I'll buy fav authors and new ones if its in my favorite genres. Just bought a new ereader so I'll be on the lookout for some new books shortly.
Selena, I'm with you. It's hard to take a risk on something new nowadays but you can't go wrong with favorite authors. =)
Tina
Abi, cool! Which reader did you get?
Tina
I always stick with my favorite authors faithfully and purchase anything new by them but I also enjoy finding new ones! Quite a few of those newbies now top my list of old favorites!
I do tend to stick with my favorite genres and as a rule don't stray from it.
My birthday came a little early and my son and husband bought me the new Sony touch screen ereader yesterday. I am excited to try it out!
Shannon, thanks! I've spotted some new and really good authors too.
Love the Sony readers. You're never going to be without it. =)
I usually stick with my favorite authors. If I ever feel like a want a change I usually check out new authors at the library before I spend money buying their books.
Rebekah, that makes sense to me for authors in print. For ebooks, I know of folks who find new ebook authors through contest winnings. Sounds great!
I stick to my favorite authors, but watch the blurbs carefully. If the story has promise, I check out the author's site. Personality weighs the scales alot. I have been known to buy a book just because the author writes for the same house I do, or because I've met the author on line and liked what they had to say.
Brynna Curry/Brianna Roarke
I do the opposite of most people, but that's not unusual for me. LOL
I try to read new authors as much as possible. My goal is to live long enough to read something by every romance author published.
Yes, I have to like the genre and blurb.
I'm excited that you're offering a year of TRS publicity to authors here! I'll definitely take you up on that! I have a mass market paperback urban fantasy series coming in 2010. Can't wait!!!
Tina, you're so right with that one! lol! I never leave home without my reader!
I would most likely stick with favorites. I wouldn't be likely to splurge on authors unknown to me. I work at a public library where lots of books are readily available to me in hardback for checkout or paperbacks via our swap system. It's not going to keep me from reading because I'll find a way. lol

I would like to be able to make a dent in my TBR pile! I am always adding more and more books to the list!
Bethany, I'm guilty of that. And I get to meet a lot of authors who I think are great personalities. They usually are even better writers. =)
You're welcome Ashlyn! For authors who post, to take us up on that offer, email Katie Raines at krraines@gmail.com (because Holly is off this evening). Thank you!
And I'm glad to see someone who tries new authors. That's great!
Deidre, fair enough. I always thought that would be my dream job -- working in a library... LOL
Shannon, I'm convinced by TBR stack is worse now because of the ereader. If I can't see it, I don't know how bad it is. LOL
I do like to stick to my favorite authors, but trying new authors is a huge amount of fun. If I see an excerpt online by an author I've never read before that hooks me, I HAVE to buy. Love when that happens even if my wallet doesn't. My TBR stacks, both paperback and electronic, are too big at the moment. Need to relax and read more.
What a great question, Tina and what super prizes. I encourage all authors to play. I've been a member of TRS since forever. (g) They are super!
Another great way to discover new authors is to take adantage of Free Reads. I have 3 free reads up at EC this year as a way to say thank you to my loyal readers, but also to introduce my work to new readers. It's a great way to test drive a new author. (wink)
I am so glad I'm not the only one with huge paperback and electronic TBR piles. I had to make up a spreadsheet in order to be able to keep track of all the books. Of course I had a spreadsheet of up-coming books also just so I don't miss any books that I want to read.
Sally, that's an excellent point. Several publishers are doing those and they are also posted at All Romance Ebooks. I'm a junkie. LOL I haunt those things. =)
Sadly, I have no wisdom to impart in how to select great reads in a crappy economy. I get a hankerin', and I'm off to buy the particular book of choice. Checkbook be damned. If we're all going to hell in a hen basket, I'm going there HAPPY!

Shannon -- spreadsheet? -->Me too! LOL
LOVE your attitude, Bryl. LOL It suits so many areas of our lives too. =)

When I'm not watching MSN Money and the latest stock quotation - ugh! I find myself reading many of the books in my TBR pile. I also find that when I do buy I'm choosing newer authors and different publishers. Right now I'm reading an old fave - a Lavyrle Spencer novel - her books have always amazed me. Her description is magical. But description or not there's something satisfying about reading a book for the second time where nothing comes as a surprise, unlike the stock market, but you still savor the read.
Tina, I thought I was probably the only crazy one that had to create a spreadsheet just to try and stay organized.
Great questions!! I read my favs and if they hsve nothing new I find someone I haven't read. I do most of my reading on my iPhone Kindle app which I am addicted to:)
Hey ladies!! I don't have a spreadsheet (not that good with Excel!!) but I have a notebook that I write all the books down I want! As Bryl said economy bedamned! If I see a book I want I usually pick it up!! I love finding new authors and all the blogs have really helped with that. I also work in a small library, so I usually get all the HC releases from them. It is a dream job.
Shannon wouldn't go right to organized. LOL I used to help me know if I bought it already or not because well, my memory is going. LOL
I love my iphone too. hehe
Martha, I'm incredibly jealous. LOL How does one land these beautiful jobs. I tried so hard in school to get jobs at the university library and there were either none or I couldn't make the schedule work. So cool...
I try to balance my day job with my writing and my relaxation time. So, when I read for fun (as opposed to books regarding stock trading/technical analysis), I first look to see if any of my favorites have a book out that I haven't read. If not, then I window-shop. I've found some great authors that way. I also try books of authors whom I've met on Twitter, and have discovered a wealth of ebooks that I love!
Cheers,

I know that balancing act Barrie -- which makes the decision harder for me. LOL I'm like you. I adore Twitter because I've met new authors there. I love ebooks!
Tina
Thanks everyone who came out! I'll check back in the morning to see who posted by midnight and see if we have more authors prizes AND who gets the Susanna Carr book. Thank you SO much for coming out today. This was fun!
Tina
I shamelessly DO judge a book by its cover. So, please make it scorching. I have my favorite authors but discover new ones by my preferred selection method of drooling over covers.
marypres@gmail.com
I'm crazy about a good cover too. Have to admit. =)
Thank you!
Tina
Okay, drew names from a hat for the book. The winner is -- Martha Lawson! Congratulations! Martha, please email Katie Raines @ krraines@gmail.com. Thank you!
Thanks everyone for coming out yesterday. It was so much fun!
